Bujinkan Budo introductory course
Next course starting Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

Interested in taking up Budo Taijutsu? We get lots of enquiries from people who are interested in what we do, so two or three times each year, we run dedicated eight-week introductory courses at the Rathmines Dojo.

These courses are designed to give people a basic introduction to how things are done in the Bujinkan Dojo. So what can you expect to happen during the classes if you join up? Each 1 hour class will include instruction in:

  • Stretching and budō etiquette
  • Ukemi (rolling and receiving skills)
  • Kamae (postures)
  • Bujinkan-style body movement with an emphasis on the Kihon Happo no kata (fundamental Bujinkan unarmed training techniques)
  • Introduction to the use of the hanbo (3ft wooden staff)

In addition, the technical material contained in this eight week course closely follows the curriculum tested for in our first grade exam. If the participant is interested, it’s possible to take the first test not long after finishing the eight week course. This is, of course, not obligatory.

If you are interested, before commencing training, you must call the instructor and arrange a time to visit the dojo to sit in a class and see what this art looks like. This will give you a good idea of what we do, and also afford us the opportunity to assess whether your goals in pursuing martial arts training are the same as ours in teaching it.

  • The next eight week course commencing: Saturday September 22nd, 2007
  • Beginners’ classes are held: Saturday afternoons from 3.00pm to 4.00pm.
  • Cost of the course: Eighty five euro, payable in advance the first evening of the course. This covers your training fees and includes a printed training guide.
  • Class duration: 1 hour per lesson

What to bring: New students don't need to purchase training gear or uniforms - any loose fitting clothing will suffice. An old martial arts uniform if you have one is ideal, as is a sports track suit. New students also need to bring clean sports socks as we don't allow trainers/runners on the tatami mats.

Still interested? If so, make sure to read through all of this website and then come down to the Dojo to watch a class - this is an absolute requirement - you must watch at least one class before commencing training. It’s a good idea to make an appointment in this regard to make sure training is taking place on the night in question - please phone or text in advance to 087 2365309. You can also e-mail any questions you may have here. Training is open to all suitable candidates over the age of 16.
